Introduction to the Website

The vision of "global lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender human rights" is a concept that is supported by human rights defenders in many countries across the world. The obstacles are challenging, given that 78 countries have laws that criminalize same-sex acts.

Envisioning is a partnership with grassroots organizations that have built movements for social change, working together to make the vision of LGBT rights a reality.

See the column at the left for a summary of the project's scope, goals and methodology.

A note on terminology:
The use of terms with regard to sexual orientation or gender identity is complex, with historical, regional, cultural, class and activist implications. The terms lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) are used throughout this project and are used by many activists and human rights workers internationally. Others may use "queer" or "sexual minorities" as umbrella words. Our use of LGBT is meant to be neither all-embracing or exclusive. As our research encompasses many regions and communities we acknowledge that terminology may differ from place to place or topic to topic.
